Bleeding Brake System

CAUTION: DO NOT  allow brake fluid to contact painted surfaces or electrical connectors. If brake fluid is spilled, clean immediately with water or damage to vehicle finish will result.
NOTE: Use only clean DOT 3 brake fluid from a sealed container. Bleeding ABS brakes requires conventional bleeding of base hydraulic system, and use of a scan tool to cycle and bleed HCU pump and solenoids. A second bleeding of base hydraulic system is then required to remove any remaining air from system.
NOTE: Manufacturer does not provide brake system bleeding information using a power or vacuum bleeding equipment. Follow the brake bleeder manufacturer's instructions carefully when using bleeding equipment.
  1. If a new master cylinder is to be installed, bench bleed master cylinder before installing on vehicle. See MASTER CYLINDER BLEEDING under BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM in the BRAKE SYSTEM article.
  2. Fill master cylinder with clean brake fluid that meets DOT 3 specifications. Open all wheel bleed valves and allow system to gravity bleed. Close bleed valves when fluid begins flowing from each valve. Refill master cylinder.
  3. Bleed master cylinder and combination valve at brakeline fittings. Depress brake pedal slowly through full travel. Close brakeline fitting, then release pedal. When air is removed, tighten brakelines to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. Install bleed hose to first bleed valve to be serviced. See BRAKELINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE  table. Submerge other end of hose in clean glass jar partially filled with clean brake fluid.
NOTE: DO NOT  pump brake pedal while bleeding brakes. Pumping brake pedal compresses air into tiny bubbles throughout system making bleeding more difficult.
  5. Open bleed valve 1/2 to 3/4 turn. Depress brake pedal slowly through full travel. Close bleed valve, then release pedal. Repeat procedure until flow of fluid shows no signs of air bubbles. Refill master cylinder reservoir and ensure proper system operation.
  6. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under instrument panel, to left of steering column. To bleed HCU, select CHASSIS SYSTEM, followed by TEVES ABS BRAKES, then BLEED BRAKES. When scan tool displays TEST COMPLETE, disconnect scan tool and repeat steps 3) and 4). Top off master cylinder reservoir and verify proper system operation.
