Pump, Water: Installation: 3.2L

The water pump on 3.2L engines is bolted directly to the engine timing chain case cover.

  1. Clean mating surfaces.
  2. Using a new seal, position water pump and install mounting bolts (1, 2). Note the shorter bolts (3) bolt directly to the timing cover. Tighten the M6 water pump mounting bolts to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS - GAS . Tighten the M8 water pump mounting bolt (4) to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS - GAS .
  3. Spin water pump to be sure that pump impeller does not rub against timing chain case/cover (1).
  4. Install the lower radiator hose and the bypass hose.

  5. Install the idler pulley (1). Tighten the mounting bolt (2) to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS - GAS .
    CAUTION:

    When installing the serpentine accessory drive belt, belt must be routed correctly. If not, engine may overheat due to water pump rotating in wrong direction.

  6. Install accessory drive belt (3).
  7. Install the inner wheel housing splash shield. Refer to SHIELD, SPLASH, FRONT WHEELHOUSE, INSTALLATION .
  8. Install the belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, INSTALLATION .
  9. Lower vehicle.

  10. slightly raise the engine to install the engine mount bracket (1). Tighten the M8 mounting bolt (3) to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS - GAS  . Tighten the M12 mounting bolts (2) to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS - GAS  .

  11. Install the right engine mount isolator (1) and tighten bolts:
    • Align the engine so that the engine is flush against the engine mount.
    • Hand tighten the center engine to engine bracket bolt (3).
    • Hand tighten the outer engine to engine bracket bolts (2).
    • Hand start the engine mount to strut tower (5).
    • Tighten mount to frame rail bolts (4) to 65 N.m (48 ft. lbs.).
    • Tighten the mount to strut tower bolt to 65 N.m (48 ft. lbs.).
    • Tighten mount to mount bracket bolts (2, 3) to 72 N.m (53 ft. lbs.).
  12. Install the overflow bottle. Refer to BOTTLE, PRESSURIZED COOLANT, INSTALLATION .
  13. Install the air cleaner body. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, INSTALLATION .
  14. Evacuate air and refill cooling system. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  15. Remove the engine support fixture.
  16. Connect negative battery cable. Tighten the nut to the proper specification. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
  17. Check the cooling system for leaks. Refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING .
