Timing Chain: Installation

  1. Align the crankshaft key with the timing mark on the cylinder block, at this time placing the piston of no. 1 cylinder on the compression TDC.

  2. Install the LH timing chain guide (A).

    Tightening torque: 

    19.6 - 24.5 N.m (2.0 - 2.5 kgf.m, 14.5 - 18.1 lb.ft)

  3. Install the LH timing chain (A) with adapter.

    NOTE: When installing the timing chain, match the timing marks on each sprocket and the timing marks on the timing chain (A).

  4. Install the LH timing chain tensioner arm (A).

    NOTE: Visually check the timing chain tensioner arm bolt and if it is damaged, replace the part.

    Tightening torque: 

    18.6 - 21.6 N.m (1.9 - 2.2 kgf.m, 13.7 - 15.9 lb.ft)

  5. Install the LH timing chain tensioner (A) with adapter.

    Tightening torque: 

    9.8 - 11.8 N.m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf.m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb.ft)

  6. Install the LH timing chain cam to cam guide (A).

    Tightening torque: 

    9.8 - 11.8 N.m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf.m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb.ft)

  7. Remove the LH timing chain tensioner fixing pin (A).

  8. Install the RH timing chain guide (A).

    Tightening torque: 

    19.6 - 24.5 N.m (2.0 - 2.5 kgf.m, 14.5 - 18.1 lb.ft)

  10. Install the RH timing chain tensioner arm (A).

    18.6 - 21.6 N.m (1.9 - 2.2 kgf.m, 13.7 - 15.9 lb.ft)

  11. Install the RH timing chain tensioner (A).

    Tightening torque: 

    9.8 - 11.8 N.m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf.m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb.ft)

  12. Remove the timing chain cam to cam guide (A).

    Tightening torque: 

    9.8 - 11.8 N.m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf.m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb.ft)

  13. Remove the RH timing chain tensioner fixing pin (A).

  14. Fit the oil pump sprocket (A) and oil pump chain (B).

    Tightening torque: 

    19.6 - 24.5 N.m (2.0 - 2.5 kgf.m, 14.5 - 18.1 lb.ft)

  15. Install the oil pump chain tensioner (A).

    Tightening torque: 

    9.8 - 11.8 N.m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf.m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb.ft)

  16. Turn the crankshaft clockwise 2 times, then check the timing again.
    NOTE:
    • Do not turn the crankshaft counterclockwise.
    • Turning the crankshaft counter clockwise before building up oil pressure in the timing chain tensioner may result in the chain disengaging from the sprocket teeth.
  17. Install the timing chain cover.

    (Refer to Timing System - "TIMING CHAIN COVER ")

  18. Install in the reverse order of removal
  19. Fill the engine oil.

    (Refer to Lubrication System - "ENGINE OIL ")

  20. Fill the engine coolant.

    (Refer to Cooling System - "COOLANT ")

    NOTE: Be sure to add coolant according to the ITM coolant refill method.
  21. Start engine and check for any leaks.
