Removal And Installation: Column: Removal

  1. Prepare the vehicle for steering column removal.
    1. Make sure the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
    2. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute to allow for the depletion of the restraint system backup power supply. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
    3. WARNING: To avoid the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the supplemental restraint system reactivation procedure.
    4. Deactivate the supplemental restraint system. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION AND REACTIVATION .
    5. Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder. For additional information, refer to IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER-FUNCTIONAL LOCK CYLINDER  or IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER-NON-FUNCTIONAL LOCK CYLINDER  .
    6. Remove the driver air bag. For additional information, refer to DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE .
    7. Remove the steering Wheel .
    8. Remove the clockspring. For additional information, refer to CLOCKSPRING .
  2. Remove the tilt wheel handle (3F609) by unscrewing it from the steering column.
  3. Remove the four upper and lower steering column shroud retaining screws. Remove the upper steering column shroud (3530) and lower steering column shroud.

  4. Disconnect the shift cable and bracket (7E395) from the steering column by removing two screws.
  5. Disconnect the transmission shift cable loop from the shift tube hook (column shift).

  6. Remove the two multi-function switch retaining screws and set the multi-function switch (13K359) aside.

  7. Remove the retaining screw and remove the wiring connector from the ignition switch (11572).

  8. Remove two front steering column nuts and the steering column impact absorber (3E664).

  9. Remove the pinch bolt from the steering column lower yoke (3N725).

  10. While supporting the column assembly, remove two rear column assembly retaining nuts.

  11. Disconnect the shift cable and bracket from the selector lever pivot.
    1. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever.
    2. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column bracket.

  12. Remove the shift cable and bracket from the lower column mounting.
  13. Remove two shift lock actuator retaining screws and remove the shift lock actuator (3Z719) (console shift only).

  14. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
