Automatic Transaxle: Removal: Transaxle

  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Disconnect the intake air temperature sensor electrical connector.

  3. Remove the crankcase ventilation tube from the air cleaner inlet tube.

  4. Remove the engine air cleaner inlet tube.

  5. Remove the engine control sensor wiring harness from the accelerator control splash shield.

  6. Remove the accelerator control splash shield.

  7. Remove the bolts from the engine control wiring harness bracket.

  8. Remove the manual control lever cable.
    1. Remove the nut.
    2. Remove the shift actuator cable fitting from the shift cable and bracket.

  9. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector.

  10. Disconnect the transaxle internal harness connector.

  11. Remove the cooler line retaining clips.

  12. Depress the tabs on the plastic insert retainer and remove cooler line from fitting.

  13. Depress the tabs on the plastic insert retainer and remove cooler line from fitting.

  14. Remove the bolts.

  15. Prepare the engine compartment to install the Engine Lift Bracket Set.
    1. Remove the coolant bypass hose.
    2. Remove PCV valve from the valve cover.
    3. Remove the upper radiator sight shield.

  16. Remove cowl assembly. For additional information, see WIPERS & WASHERS .
  17. NOTE: The right hand side of engine faces rearward.

  18. Install the LH engine lifting bracket on the right (back) hand side of the engine.
  19. Install the RH engine lifting bracket on the left (front) hand side of the engine.

  20. Install the special tools.

  21. Raise the vehicle.
  22. Drain the transmission fluid by lowering the transaxle pan.
  23. CAUTION: If the steering gear is removed with the subframe, do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the steering column intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the air bag clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be recentered before the vehicle is driven. For additional information, see AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
  24. Remove the sub frame assembly.
  25. Remove the starter motor. For additional information, see STARTERS .
  26. Remove the transmission housing cover.

  27. Remove the four torque converter-to-flexplate nuts by rotating the engine.

  28. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connection.

  29. Position the High-Lift Transmission Jack under the transaxle.

  30. Remove the transaxle retaining bolt.

  31. Remove the transaxle retaining bolt.

  32. Remove the bolts.

  33. Lower the transaxle assembly from the engine compartment.
  34. Remove the rear engine support bracket.
