Steering Column: Disassembly

NOTE: For shift interlock service information, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS .
  1. Remove the steering column. For additional information, refer to STEERING COLUMN .
  2. NOTE: To ease the removal of the spring, make sure that the column tilt assembly is in the upward position.
  3. Release the tilt tension spring from the hanger.

    Pull downward on the spring and release the spring tension, and route the spring above the spring hanger.

  4. Using suitable cutters, remove and discard the tilt tension spring retainer clip.
  5. Remove the tilt tension spring.
  6. Remove and discard the tilt lever nut.
  7. Remove the tilt tension spring hanger.
  8. Remove the tilt lever bolt.
  9. Remove the tilt lever bolt washer.
  10. Remove the sleeve tilt lever bolt washer.
  11. Pivot the support/tilt bracket upward.
  12. Pivot the support/tilt bracket bushing.
  13. Remove the release lever spring.
  14. Remove the tilt lever sleeve washer.
  15. Remove the bearing.
    CAUTION: Do not use a screwdriver to separate the clamp retainer or damage can result.
  16. Remove the tilt lever.
  17. Remove the clamp plate.
  18. Remove the 2 bolts, the steering column harness retainer bracket and the shift cable bracket.
