Steering Column Alignment

  1. Remove "U" joint. Fit alignment gauge shown in Fig 2 .  Make sure setscrew seats in splined groove.
  2. Fit 1 packing washer between each upper column mounting bracket. Tighten bolts until washers are just pinched. Tighten column plate bolts just enough to retain column in center of hole. Make sure rack has original amount of shims. Tighten bolts.
  3. To correct horizontal misalignment, move end of column, then tighten column plate bolts.
  4. To correct vertical misalignment, use shims placed between rack mounting brackets and bring left and right alignment into tolerance. Do not use more than 3 shims on either bracket. Refit rack and tighten mounting bolts.

  5. Check gauge alignment. Make sure pinion has clearance. If there is interference, adjust shims. If alignment is still not adequate, readjust upper shims (packing washers). Make sure not to exceed 0.235" (6 mm) thickness with shims. Tighten top bolts. Take off gauge set.
  6. Measure gap between column upper mounting flange and body bracket at third bolt position. Fit packing shims equal to gap. Tighten bolt. Make sure to rivet shims to rack mounting bracket before completing job.
