Ignition Timing

NOTE: Self-powered timing lights may not operate with this system. Use a vehicle-battery-powered timing light for this procedure.
  1. Warm up engine and ensure idle speed is correct before adjustment of ignition timing. Turn all electric loads off. Connect a tachometer to engine (if necessary). Check idle speed and set to specification.
  2. Connect a timing light to "L-1" high-tension lead. Ensure mark on pulley and indicator pin are aligned
    • Leading is 5 degrees ATDC (Yellow mark).
    • Trailing is 20 degrees ATDC (Red mark).

If ignition timing is not correct, crank angle sensor must be rotated until timing marks are correctly aligned.

  3. To check advance, connect a timing light to "L-1" high- tension lead. Increase engine speed and ensure ignition timing advances. Disconnect timing light.
