On-Vehicle Testing: Generator

  1. Verify that the drive belt tension is within the specification. See BELT DEFLECTION  under ADJUSTMENTS.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to START and verify that the generator turns smoothly without any noise while the engine is running.
  3. Using a voltmeter measure the voltage at the terminals as indicated in the table. See Fig 1 and GENERATOR VOLTAGE  table.
  4. Measure the current at terminal "B" using an ammeter. See Fig 2 and Fig 3 . If not as specified, replace the generator.
  5. The values are measured with the battery fully charged. As the battery discharges, the current becomes greater. When the measuring condition is "electrical load ON", turn all the following electrical systems on.
    • Headlight (High Beam)
    • A/C (Max.)
    • Brake Light
    • Cooling Fan
    • Condenser Fan
