Power Steering: Description

Power steering system is composed of power steering pump, steering gear and connecting hoses. The ZF 60, ZF 61 and VT49 type pumps have integral reservoirs. The VT 61 pump consists of 3 parts: reservoir, pump housing and bearing flange. The ZF 61 and VT 61 pumps (190 series) are not interchangeable. Pumps are made of a light alloy material. Alloy pumps are interchangeable with the cast iron type.

Pumps are engine driven vane-type with a control valve, and an automatic compensation for free-play in the steering gear. Steering gear has integral piston/steering nut. Fluid pressure to each side of piston/steering nut is controlled by a control valve which is moved by a lever from steering column shaft. Steering system has a digressive action. Boost is relatively weak in the central range, and increases as steering resistance increases.
