Task 

• Switching off starter (M1) as soon as engine self-running is reached.

Operation 

The starter (M1) is actuated by the IFI or DFI control module (N3/7, N3/8) via the fuse and relay module (K40/4) and the starter relay (K40/4k2).

The values for engine self-running recognition, starter protection, ring gear protection and vehicle electrical system protection are stored in the control module in the form of characteristic curves of fixed values.

Conditions for starter ON: 

• Drive authorization system unlocked

  and

• Engine speed = 0

  and

• Selector lever position P or N engaged

  and

• One-touch operation of key start position (∠60 msec.)

Conditions for starter OFF: 

• Key in position 0 or 1 (start operation ended)

  or

• engine self-running reached

  or

• maximum permissible engine speed is exceeded once (starter protection)

  or

• a drive position is engaged during starting

  or

• maximum start ON time is exceeded (electrical signal protection).

  The electrical signal protection is not active if the key is held in start position 3. The conditions stated above then continue to apply for switching off the starter

In the case of a repeat start, there is a blocking period of 1.5 seconds after the starter is switched off in order to prevent the starter meshing with the starter ring gear of the engine when the starter pinion is still rotating (ring gear protection).
