Ignition Timing

NOTE: Timing instrument should be connected to No. 1 spark plug using adapter or snap-on connector. Do not puncture spark plug wire or boot to make connection.
  1. Place transmission in "P" or "N". Disconnect and plug vacuum lines at distributor. Connect timing light and tachometer to engine.
  2. If vehicle is equipped with a barometric pressure sensor, disconnect it from ignition module and place a jumper wire across Yellow and Black wire pins in ignition module connector.
  3. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. With engine at timing RPM, check timing.
  4. If timing is within 2° of specified timing, do not adjust. If not, loosen distributor hold-down bolt and turn distributor to adjust. Tighten bolt, then recheck timing.
  5. Remove test equipment and reconnect vacuum lines to distributor. Remove jumper wire from ignition module connector and reconnect to sensor.
