Starter Motor Load Test Using Sabre Tester
CAUTION:
Before testing starter motor, ensure transmission is in Park or Neutral (A/T), or clutch pedal is depressed (M/T).
NOTE:
Following procedures apply to starter motor load testing using Starter, Alternator, Battery, Regulator Electrical (SABRE) tester.
- Ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure battery connections are clean and tight. Disconnect ignition coil harness connector to prevent engine from starting. Connect Starter, Alternator, Battery, Regulator Electrical (SABRE) tester. Connect remote starter switch to starter motor "S" and "B" terminals. See Figure .
- Ensure rheostat on tester is turned completely counterclockwise. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Crank engine with remote starter switch while checking exact voltmeter reading. Stop cranking engine and reduce resistance of carbon pile rheostat until voltmeter indicates same reading as obtained during cranking.
- Tester's ammeter will indicate starter motor current draw under load. If amperage draw exceeds 800 amps, replace starter motor. See STARTER MOTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check system operation.
