Section 143 (Starters): Description

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2005 BMW 745i, 2005 BMW 745Li, 2004 BMW 745i, 2004 BMW 745Li, and 2003 BMW 745i. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Bosch starter is a brush-type, series-wound electric motor with an overrunning clutch. Field frame carries pole shoes and field coils, and is enclosed by commutator end frame and drive bushing. Armature shaft drive end drives a reduction gear.

Automatic start is intended to prevent driver from pressing the starter for longer than necessary. Even under cold start conditions, the driver only needs to press the start button briefly. The DME takes on the rest of the task. The DME is notified of start request via the Car Access Control Module (CACM). DME checks start conditions such as engine speed, selector lever position, EWS signal and activates start-locking relay through a separate output. The starter motor is operated by this relay. The start-locking relay is activated until engine starts. If engine does not start, start-locking relay is switched off after 20 seconds. If engine is blocked, start-locking relay is switched off after a few seconds.
