Single EGR Valve

  1. Check hoses for proper routing and condition. Cold start engine and run at idle. Place finger under EGR control valve to check for diaphragm operation while increasing engine speed to 2500 RPM. With coolant temperature below 131°F (55°C), the diaphragm should be stationary.
  2. If the diaphragm operates, check for a clogged vacuum hose (Green stripe) between EGR control valve and thermo valve or a defective thermo valve. If the diaphragm does not operate, EGR valve is operating properly.
  3. Warm engine until coolant temperature exceeds 104°F (40°C). Place finger under EGR control valve to check for diaphragm operation and increase engine speed to 2500 RPM. If the diaphragm operates, EGR valve is good.
  4. If diaphragm does not operate, check for cracked or clogged vacuum hose, defective thermo valve and/or broken EGR control valve diaphragm. Replace as required.
