Injection Pump Timing
- Turn crankshaft to place piston in No. 1 cylinder at TDC on compression stroke. Check to ensure that timing marks on camshaft and injector pump timing sprockets are in alignment with respective marks. See Figure .
- Loosen, but do not remove, four nuts securing injection pipes on injection pump side. When loosening nuts, hold delivery valve holder with a wrench to prevent it from rotating with nut.
- Loosen, do not remove, two nuts and bolts holding injector pump to engine. Remove plug from rear of pump and attach Prestroke Measuring Adapter (MD998384). Before installation of adapter (MD998384) make sure that push rod is protruding .4" (10 mm). See Fig 1 .
- Turn crankshaft in the direction of normal rotation until the notch on the pulley is 30° before top dead center on the compression stroke of No. 1 cylinder. Set dial indicator to zero. See Fig 1 . Slightly turn crankshaft clockwise and counterclockwise to make sure that dial indicator does not deviate from zero. If it does, reposition crankshaft pulley to the 30° before top dead center position.
- Turn crankshaft in direction of normal rotation to bring notch to 2° after top dead center. Check that dial indicator reads 0.0383-0.0405" (0.97-1.03 mm). If dial indicator does not read within specifications tilt injector pump body to right or left to adjust. Tighten injection pump mounting bolts and nuts to specified torque.
- Repeat steps 4) and 5) to check that adjustment has been made correctly. If correct, remove prestroke measuring adapter. Reinstall plug on pump with copper gasket and tighten to specified torque. Tighten injector pipes to specified torque. Take care to hold delivery valve holder with a wrench to prevent it from turning with the nut.
