Injection Pump Timing

  1. Turn crankshaft to place piston in No. 1 cylinder at TDC on compression stroke. Loosen but do not remove the injection pipe union nuts (4 in all) on injection pump side. When loosening union nuts, hold delivery valve holder with a spanner to prevent it from rotating with union nut.
  2. Loosen but do not remove 2 nuts and bolts securing injection pump. Before installation of Prestroke Measuring Adapter (MD-998384), ensure that push rod of tool is protruding by 0.4" (10 mm). Protrusion of push rod can be adjusted with the inner nut.

  3. Remove the timing check plug from the injection pump head, and attach Prestoke Measuring Adapter (MD-998384) and a dial indicator.

  4. Turn crankshaft to such as position that the notch on pulley is at approximately 30° before TDC on compression stroke of piston No. 1 cylinder. Then, set dial indicator to 0 (zero).
  5. Slightly turn crankshaft clockwise and counterclockwise to ensure that dial indicator pointer does not deviate from 0 (zero) position. If it does, readjust pulley position so that notch on pulley is at 30° before TDC. See Fig 3 .

  6. Turn crankshaft in normal direction to bring notch to 5° ATDC and check that dial indicator reads .0383-.0405" (.97- 1.03 mm).
  7. If dial indicator does not indicate specified value, tilt injection pump body to right or left until dial indicator is within specified range. Then, tighten injection pump mounting nuts and bolts to specified torque.
NOTE: Repeat steps 4 through 7 to ensure adjustment is made correctly.
