Fuel Injection System - Diesel: Description
The Mitsubishi diesel fuel injection system consists of a combination injection pump, injection nozzles, fuel tank, lines and hoses and a fuel filter assembly. The filter assembly contains a fuel filter, a fuel pre-heater, an integral priming pump and a water separator.
The combination injection pump has a low pressure vane type feed pump, with a high pressure fuel distributor. The pump is driven from the engine timing belt. It has a boost compensator to supply a richer fuel mixture when the turbocharger is working. It also has an integral fuel cut-off solenoid for engine shut down.
The injectors use a needle type valve at the end of each nozzle. Injector opening pressure can be changed by adding to or subtracting from adjusting shim thickness. The adjusting shim is located just above the needle valve return spring in the injector.
Integrated into the fuel system is a "Quick Glow" glow plug system to aid in cold start operation. The glow plug system consists of a glow plug in each cylinder, 2 relays, a dropping resistor, a glow plug control unit and various indicator lights and switches.
