Air Injection System

The air injection system is a pulse action design. Primary components of the system are the secondary air control valve, secondary air control solenoid valve and a reed valve. All truck and Colt (1.5L) models use an additional reed valve downstream of the front catalytic converter. The reed valve is used as a one way check valve.

Based on sensor information, the ECU will energize the secondary air control solenoid valve. When energized, the solenoid valve opens to allow manifold vacuum application to the secondary air control valve. When vacuum is applied to control valve diaphragm, secondary air circuit is open and air injection system is activated. See Figure .

The air injection system is used to direct secondary air into the exhaust system near the catalytic converter. As a result, unburned gases will further oxidize and with assistance from the catalytic converter, promote neutralization of exhaust emissions.
