EGR System Check

NOTE: DO NOT use a test light.
  1. Connect EGR tester (0090.23) and additional harness (0090.26) as follows: connect red test lead to pin 4 of the 6 pin connector. Connect the white test lead to pin 5 on the 6 pin connector. Connect the green test lead to pin 6 of the 6 pin connector. The yellow test lead is not used.
  2. If necessary, ground wire 47B of the EGR thermocontact to simulate a warm engine. Run engine, verify that both electrovalves energize.
  3. Vacuum electrovalve is energized when red test light is on and vacuum is applied. Atmosphere Electrovalve is energized when green test light is on and vacuum is dumped. Visually check diaphragm movement of EGR valve while testing.
  4. While accelerating engine: notice the red and green test lights bouncing on and off. Visually check diaphragm movement on EGR valve while testing.
  5. When engine speed reaches 3000 RPM, the green light will stay on indicating atmosphere electrovalve has dumped.
  6. If green test light stays on with no red light, check connections and operation of atmosphere electrovalve dump circuit. Some possible causes could be no ground for electrovalve or blockage of atmosphere electrovalve dump circuit.
  7. If red light stays on,check connections and operation of vacuum electrovalve, EGR valve and solex throttle flap. Some possible causes could be a defective vacuum electrovalve, pinched or disconnected vacuum hose, EGR valve seized in open or partially open position or throttle flap jammed in open position.
