Injection Pump Timing: Notes
- With pump mounting bolts loose, dial indicator attached to No. 4 cylinder exhaust valve, and engine at .28" (7 mm) BTDC, rotate injection pump body away from engine (full retard). See FUEL INJECTION PUMP INSTALLATION.
- Clean the hydraulic head and remove the inspection plug. See Figure . Using Adapters (8.0117T, P, and S), install dial indicator on pump. Turn engine and locate BDC and TDC points on the pump's dial indicator. At BDC, the pump dial indicator should have .04" (1 mm) preload.
- Zero the pump dial indicator at BDC. Bring piston No. 4 to TDC of compression stroke. Zero engine dial indicator. Turn engine 90° in reverse. Recheck pump dial indicator.
- Turn engine in normal direction of rotation and bring No. 4 piston to, .016" (.40 mm) BTDC or 7° BTDC on R112 and R112-1 models. On R131 and R131/1 models, bring No. 4 to .02" (.51 mm) or 8° BTDC.
- Rotate pump towards the engine until pump dial indicator indicates a pump lift of .020" (.50 mm). Tighten pump mounting bolts, front and rear.
- Check timing by rotating engine 1 3/4 turns in normal direction. Rotate engine slowly in normal direction while watching pump dial indicator.
- Stop turning engine when indicator shows a lift of .020" (.50 mm). No. 4 piston should then be at .016" (.40 mm) BTDC on Federal models, .02" (.51 mm) BTDC on Calif. models. If readjustment is necessary, rotate pump.
- Remove dial indicators and supports. Install inspection plug with a new gasket. Install springs, washer and half cones of No. 4 exhaust valve and adjust clearance. Install pipes, hoses, and controls. Adjust cables and bleed fuel circuit.
