EGR System: Operation

The EGR is opened by ported manifold vacuum to allow exhaust gas into the intake manifold. The exhaust gas then moves with the air/fuel mixture into the combustion chamber. The EGR valve is usually open under the following conditions.

• Warm engine operation.
• Above idle speed.

The amount of exhaust gas recirculated is controlled by variations in vacuum and exhaust back pressure.
