Anti-Lock Brake System: Operation

ABS5 or ABS5/ABD control unit is located in right front side of luggage compartment. See Fig 1 . ABS5 and ABS5/ABD use one speed sensor at each wheel. When brake pedal is applied, the control unit monitors input signals from each wheel speed sensor. If control unit senses wheel lock-up, it will output a signal to appropriate hydraulic output unit.

Each output unit allows hydraulic pressure to increase or decrease to the appropriate brake caliper. ABS5 control unit regulates hydraulic pressure individually to each front wheel and in tandem to both rear wheels. ABS5/ABD control unit regulates hydraulic pressure individually to each front and rear wheel.

ABS5 helps prevent wheel lock-up during heavy braking, thus providing the driver with better steering control of the vehicle. ABD prevents wheel spin during hard acceleration by automatically applying brakes to appropriate drive wheel. ABD operates up to a speed of 45 MPH. If brake temperatures are high, control unit will reduce or cancel ABD operation until brake temperatures are reduced.
