Exciter Diodes

  1. Connect negative terminal of ohmmeter or a self-powered test light (40-volt maximum) to generator D+ terminal. Measure resistance or continuity between terminal D+ and each diode stator terminal, one at a time. See Figure. Test light should glow or ohmmeter should indicate low resistance when positive terminal of test light or ohmmeter is connected to each diode stator terminal.
  2. Reverse ohmmeter or test light connections, and repeat each measurement. Test light should not glow or ohmmeter should indicate high resistance. Replace diode assembly if any diode is defective.
