Charging System Test

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check for Engine Electrical? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE ELECTRICAL  .
  2. Start engine. Observe the charge indicator on the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) or message in the Driver Information Center (DIC). Does the charge indicator illuminate or the DIC display a charging system message? If yes, go to next step. If no, problem is intermittent.
  3. Turn OFF the ignition. Connect the Red lead of the Starting And Charging System Tester (SA9154Z-A) to the battery positive terminal. Connect the Gray lead of the tester to the output circuit of the generator. Start engine. Turn on the tester. Turn off all vehicle accessories. Follow tester's prompts. Press CHARGING SYSTEM TEST. Is the voltage displayed within 13.0-15.5 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to  5 .
  4. Is the generator output current greater than or equal to the load test value? See BATTERY SPECIFICATIONS  . If yes, go to step  6 . If no, go to next step.
  5. Replace the generator. See GENERATOR  in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After replacing generator, go to next step.
  6. Operate the vehicle in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If yes, generator is okay. If no, go to step  2 .
