NOTE: Prior to sale or delivery of any 2005 Saturn ION with a 2.2L four-cylinder engine (RPO L61) currently in your inventory, perform this correction on vehicles built prior to and including VIN Breakpoints listed in the table below.

Condition

The original equipment ECM calibration may cause the vehicle to exhibit any one of a number of symptoms.

Correction

Update every affected 2005 Saturn ION with a 2.2L four-cylinder engine (RPO L61) in retail inventory with the latest ECM calibrations. Follow the steps listed in the Service Procedure section of this bulletin to reprogram the ECM with appropriate new calibration.

Service Procedure

Reprogramming ECM 

IMPORTANT: Before installing new ECM calibration, make sure the Saturn Service Stall (SSS) version is TIS 5.0 2005 or later.
IMPORTANT: While ignition is OFF, apply parking brake to disable daytime running lights (DRLs) prior to starting reprogramming procedures.
IMPORTANT: Technician must select "Reprogram" option in order to reprogram the ECM.

Reprogram the ECM with the appropriate calibration.

Use the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) software version 5.0 2005 or later data CD. Refer to "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the SSS User Guide and "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Vehicle Control Systems section of the 2005 Saturn ION Service Manual, Vol. 3 (SI Document ID# 1265170) for reprogramming procedures.

Claim Information

To receive credit for this repair, submit a claim through the Saturn Dealer System for Y0035 (EE PROM - Reprogramming [Install New PCM Calibration]). This is a unique labor operation number for use only with this bulletin. This number will not be published in the Labor Time Guide.

Prior to sale or delivery of any 2005 Saturn ION with a 2.2L four-cylinder engine (RPO L61) currently in your inventory, perform this correction on vehicles built prior to and including VIN Breakpoints listed in the table below.

This bulletin is being revised to change "Replace and Reprogram" option to "Reprogram" in the Service Procedure and to delete the end date. Please discard Inventory Upgrade Bulletin 05538 issued March 2005.
