Automatic Transaxle Assembly: Installation

  1. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the torque converter clutch (see INSPECTION  ).
  2. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using a vernier caliper, measure the dimension "A" between the transaxle fitting part of the engine and the converter clutch fitting part of the drive plate.

    2. Set the key at the top of the front oil pump drive gear and put a mark on the housing.

    3. Put a mark on the torque converter clutch so that its groove is clearly indicated.

    4. Align the marks on the case and converter clutch, and fit the splined part of the input shaft to the spline part of the turbine runner.

    5. Rotating the converter clutch, fit the spline part of the stator shaft with that of the stator.

      HINT:

      Rotate it approximately 180°.

    6. Rotating the converter clutch, align the marks on the case and converter clutch again, and fit the key of the oil pump drive gear into the keyway of the converter.
      NOTE: When rotating the converter, do not push it with excessive force.

    7. Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure the dimension "B" shown in the illustration and check that "B" is greater than "A".

      HINT:

      Dimension "A" is the measurement between the transaxle fitting part of the engine and the converter clutch fitting part of the drive plate.

      Standard dimension: A + 1 mm (0.04 in.) or more 

      NOTE: Remember to subtract the thickness of the straightedge.

  3. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUBASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily install the oil cooler outlet tube.
    2. Temporarily install the oil cooler inlet tube.
    3. Coat a new O-ring with ATF, and install it on the oil filler tube.
    4. Install the oil filler tube on the automatic transaxle.
    5. Install the breather hose on the oil filler tube.
    6. Install the oil cooler tube clamp with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 5.5 N*m (56 kgf*cm, 49 in.*lbf) 

    7. Install the ATF level gauge.

  4. INSTALL NO. 1 OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE 
    1. Using SST, tighten the oil cooler outlet tube.

      SST 09023-12701 

      Torque: 34 N*m (347 kgf*cm, 25 ft.*lbf) 

  5. INSTALL NO. 1 OIL COOLER INLET TUBE 
    1. Using SST, tighten the oil cooler inlet tube.

      SST 09023-12701 

      Torque: 34 N*m (347 kgf*cm, 25 ft.*lbf)

  6. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET LH 
    1. Install the engine mounting bracket LH on the automatic transaxle with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 64 N*m (653 kgf*cm, 47 ft.*lbf)

  7. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the automatic transaxle on the engine with the 7 bolts.

      Torque: 30 N*m (301 kgf*cm, 22 ft.*lbf)

    2. Install the 6 torque converter mounting bolts.

      Torque: 27 N*m (280 kgf*cm, 20 ft.*lbf) 

      HINT:

      First install the white colored bolt, and then the remaining 5 bolts.

  8. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER 
    1. Install the flywheel housing under cover.

  9. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET REAR 
    1. Install the engine mounting bracket on the automatic transaxle with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 49 N*m (500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf) 

  10. INSTALL FRONT SUSPENSION CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the front suspension crossmember (see INSTALLATION ).

  11. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR REAR 
    1. Install the engine mounting insulator rear on the engine mounting bracket with the bolt and nut.

      Torque: 64 N*m (653 kgf*cm, 47 ft.*lbf)

  12. CONNECT ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET LH 
    1. Connect the engine mounting bracket to the engine mounting insulator with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 49 N*m (500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf)

    2. Connect the ground cable to the engine mounting bracket with the bolt.

      Torque: 26 N*m (260 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf)

  13. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the starter with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 37 N*m (380 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf) 

    2. Connect the connecter.
    3. Install the starter wire with the nut.

      Torque: 9.8 N*m (100 kgf*cm, 87 in.*lbf)

    4. Install the flywheel housing side cover.

  14. INSTALL DRIVE SHAFT HEAT INSULATOR SUBASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily tighten the bolt labeled A.
    2. Fully tighten the 2 bolts labeled B.

      Torque: 18 N*m (180 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf) 

    3. Fully tighten the bolt labeled A.

      Torque: 18 N*m (180 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf) 

  15. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY LH 
    1. Install the front drive shaft (see INSTALLATION ).

    1. Install the front drive shaft (see INSTALLATION ).
  17. INSTALL FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the front exhaust pipe (see INSTALLATION ).
  18. CONNECT OIL COOLER HOSE 
  19. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER LH 
  20. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER RH 
  21. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL 

    Torque: 103 N*m (1,050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf)

  22. CONNECT CONNECTOR 
    1. Connect the transmission wire connector.
    2. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    3. Connect the transmission revolution sensor connector.

  23. INSTALL AIR CLEANER BRACKET 
    1. Install the air cleaner bracket and transmission control cable support with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 19 N*m (195 kgf*cm, 14 ft.*lbf) 

    2. Connect the wire harness clamp to the air cleaner bracket.

  24. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Install the wire harness clamp bracket with the bolt.

      Torque: 5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf)

  25. INSTALL NO. 1 TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET 
    1. Install the control cable bracket with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 12 N*m (122 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf)

  26. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily install the control cable on the control shaft lever with the nut.
    2. Install the control cable and a new clip on the bracket.
  27. INSTALL AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the air cleaner (see INSTALLATION ).
  28. INSTALL NO. 2 CYLINDER HEAD COVER

  29. INSTALL COWL TOP PANEL OUTER 
    1. Install the cowl top panel outer (see INSTALLATION ).
  30. INSTALL WINDSHIELD WIPER LINK ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the windshield wiper link (see INSTALLATION ).
  31. INSTALL BATTERY 
  32. INSTALL HOOD SUB-ASSEMBLY 

    Torque: 13 N*m (132 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf) 

  33. INSPECT AND ADJUST HOOD SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect and adjust the hood (see ADJUSTMENT ).
  34. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID 
  35. INSPECT AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID 
    1. Inspect the AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID  (see ).
  36. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION 
    1. Adjust the shift lever position (see ADJUSTMENT  ).
  37. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION 
    1. Inspect the shift lever position (see ADJUSTMENT  ).
  38. INSPECT AND ADJUST FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT 
    1. Inspect and adjust the front wheel alignment (see INSPECTION ).
  39. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL 
    1. Check the ABS speed sensor signal (see HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING ).
  40. PERFORM INITIALIZATION 
    1. Perform initialization (see INITIALIZATION  ).
      NOTE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
