Automatic Transaxle Assembly: Installation: Installation

  1. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY  . See step  1
  2. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using vernier calipers, measure dimension A between the transaxle fitting part of the engine and the converter fitting part of the drive plate.

    2. Set the key at the top of the front oil pump drive gear and put a mark on the housing.

    3. Put a mark on the torque converter so that its groove is clearly indicated.

    4. Align the mark on the case with the one on the converter and fit the spline of the input shaft to the spline of the turbine runner.

    5. Rotating the converter, fit the spline of the stator shaft with that of the stator.

      HINT: 

      Rotate it approximately 180 degrees.

    6. Rotating the converter, align the mark on the case with the one on the converter again and fit the key of the oil pump drive gear into the keyway of the converter.

      NOTE:

      Do not push the converter excessively when rotating it.

    7. Using vernier calipers and a straight edge, measure dimension B shown in the illustration and check that dimension B is greater than dimension A, which was measured in step (a).

      Standard

      A + 1 mm (0.04 in.) or more

      NOTE:

      Subtract the thickness of the straight edge from the measured value to gain dimension B.

  3. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the automatic transaxle to the engine with the 7 bolts.

      Torque: 29 N*m ( 296 kgf*cm, 21 in.*lbf) 

  4. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY  . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 1
  5. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING SIDE COVER  . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 2
  6. INSTALL NO. 1 TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET 
    1. Install the No. 1 transmission control cable bracket to the automatic transaxle with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 12 N*m ( 122 kgf*cm, 9 in.*lbf) 

  7. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE SUPPORT 
    1. Install the transmission control cable support to the automatic transaxle with the bolt.

      Torque: 5.0 N*m ( 51 kgf*cm, 44 ft.*lbf) 

  8. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET LH 
    1. Install the engine mounting bracket LH to the automatic transaxle with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 64 N*m ( 653 kgf*cm, 47 in.*lbf) 

  9. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUBASSEMBLY 
    1. Coat a new O-ring with Toyota Genuine ATF WS or equivalent, and install it onto the oil filler tube sub-assembly.
    2. Install the oil filler tube sub-assembly onto the automatic transaxle with the bolt.

      Torque: 12 N*m ( 122 kgf*cm, 9 in.*lbf) 

  10. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL LEVEL GAUGE SUBASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the oil level gauge sub-assembly into the transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly.
  11. INSTALL NO. 2 OIL COOLER TUBE CLAMP 
    1. Provisionally install the outlet No. 1 oil cooler tube into the oil cooler tube union.

    2. Provisionally install the inlet No. 1 oil cooler tube into the oil cooler tube union.
    3. Install the No. 2 oil cooler tube clamp onto the transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly with the bolt.

      Torque: 5.5 N*m ( 56 kgf*cm, 49 ft.*lbf) 

  12. INSTALL OUTLET NO. 1 OIL COOLER TUBE 
    1. Using a union nut wrench, install the outlet No. 1 oil cooler tube while holding the oil cooler tube union with a wrench.

      without union nut wrench 

      Torque: 34 N*m ( 347 kgf*cm, 25 in.*lbf) 

      with union nut wrench 

      Torque: 32 N*m ( 327 kgf*cm, 24 in.*lbf) 

      HINT: 

      • This torque value can be obtained by using a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 345 mm (13.58 in.) and a union nut wrench with a fulcrum length of 30 mm (1.18 in.).
      • This torque value is effective when the union nut wrench is parallel to the torque wrench.
  13. INSTALL INLET NO. 1 OIL COOLER TUBE 
    1. Using a union nut wrench, install the inlet No. 1 oil cooler tube while holding the oil cooler tube union with a wrench.

      without union nut wrench 

      Torque: 34 N*m ( 347 kgf*cm, 25 in.*lbf) 

      with union nut wrench 

      Torque: 32 N*m ( 327 kgf*cm, 24 in.*lbf) 

      HINT: 

      • This torque value can be obtained by using a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 345 mm (13.58 in.) and a union nut wrench with a fulcrum length of 30 mm (1.18 in.).
      • This torque value is effective when the union nut wrench is parallel to the torque wrench.
  14. INSTALL DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SETTING BOLT 
    1. Apply a few drops of adhesive to 2 threads on the tip of the 6 torque converter clutch mounting bolts.

      Adhesive

      Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324, Three Bond 1324 or equivalent

    2. Install the 6 torque converter set bolts while holding the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench.

      Torque: 28 N*m ( 286 kgf*cm, 21 in.*lbf) 

      NOTE:

      First install the black colored bolt, and then install the remaining 5 bolts.

  15. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER 
    1. Install the flywheel housing under cover to the automatic transaxle.

  16. INSTALL ENGINE LATERAL CONTROL ROD 
    1. Install the lateral control rod onto the automatic transaxle with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 64 N*m ( 653 kgf*cm, 47 in.*lbf) 

  17. INSTALL ENGINE ASSEMBLY WITH TRANSAXLE 
    1. Install the engine assembly with transaxle. Refer to INSTALLATION .
