SERVICE INFORMATION

A modified "OFF" button return spring is being installed in production since February 1986. 1985-86 Subaru 4-Dr Station Wagon and 3-Dr models with buttons which do not latch, need "OFF" button spring replaced. To determine if a new spring is necessary, test the operation of mode panel buttons both with engine running and with engine off. If the buttons do not latch properly with the engine on or off, replace the mode panel assembly. If the buttons do not latch only when the engine is running, replace the "Off" button return spring by following the described repair procedure. The mode panel springs are available through Subaru. Parts number (72047GA570).

REPAIR PROCEDURE

  1. Remove the mode panel assembly from the vehicle.
  2. Remove the temperature control lever assembly from the mode panel assembly.
  3. Using a "C" clamp and a small piece of wood, clamp the circuit board to the panel assembly. Excessive pressure may damage the circuit board. Clamping is necessary to keep the metal plate in position to avoid the internal levers from coming apart.
  4. Carefully pry the metal tabs up to allow removal of the valve body. (Valve bodies may have 2 or 4 metal tabs. Both are acceptable.) Be sure the metal plate is held tightly against the mode panel, release the lock and remove the valve body.
  5. Carefully raise the "Off" button shaft using a paper clip or small screwdriver and remove the spring.
  6. Install the modified spring, ensuring proper seating.
NOTE: The modified spring is shorter than the original.
  7. After confirming that the rubber valve seats are properly installed, lubricate them lightly with silicone spray, and reinstall the valve body. Re-bend the tabs tightly against the valve body.
  8. Remove the clamp and reassemble the temperature control lever to the mode panel.
  9. Before completing installation of the mode panel, check the buttons for proper operation with and without engine running.
