Service Procedure: Engine: Removal
- Set the vehicle on lift arms.
- Open front hood and support with a stay.
- Release fuel pressure.
- Disconnect fuel pump relay connector.
- Start the engine, and run until it stalls.
- After the engine stalls, crank it for five seconds more.
- Turn ignition switch to "OFF".
- Remove filler cap.
- Disconnect battery ground terminal.
- Remove under cover.
- Drain coolant, see DRAIN & FILL COOLING SYSTEM

Set container under the vehicle, and loose drain cock from radiator.
- Remove cooling system.
- Disconnect connectors from radiator main fan and sub fan motors.
- Disconnect radiator outlet hose from thermostat cover, and remove ATF cooler hose from clip of radiator.
- Radiator outlet hose
- ATF cooler hose
- Disconnect ATF cooler hoses from radiator (AT vehicles).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove V-belt covers.
- Disconnect radiator inlet hose from radiator.
- Remove radiator upper bracket, and remove radiator assembly from vehicle.
- Collect refrigerant, and remove flexible hoses (With A/C).
- Place and connect the attachment hose to the refrigerant recycle system.
- Collect refrigerant from A/C system.
- Disconnect A/C flexible hoses from A/C compressor.
- Remove air intake system.
Remove air intake duct with air cleaner case.
- Remove air cleaner case stay.
- MT vehicles
- AT vehicles
- Disconnect the following connectors and cables.
- Front oxygen sensor connector
- Engine ground terminal
- Engine harness connector
- Generator connector terminal and A/C compressor connectors (With A/C).
- Accelerator cable and cruise control cable
- Disconnect the following hoses.
- Brake booster vacuum hose
- Heater inlet and outlet hoses
- Cruise control vacuum hose
- Remove power steering pump.
- Loosen lock bolt and slider bolt, and remove front side V-belt.
- Remove power steering pipe bracket.
- Remove bolts at power steering pump from bracket.
- Place power steering pump on the right side wheel apron.
- Remove front exhaust pipe and center exhaust pipe, see EXHAUST SYSTEM
.
- Lift-up the vehicle.
- Disconnect connector from rear oxygen sensor.
- Remove nuts which install front exhaust pipe onto engine.
- Separate center exhaust pipe from rear exhaust pipe.
- Remove bolt which installs center exhaust pipe on hanger bracket.
- Take off front and center exhaust pipes.
CAUTION: Exhaust pipe will drop when all bolts are removed. So, hold it when removing the last bolt. - Remove nuts which hold lower side of transmission to engine.
- Remove nuts which install front cushion rubber onto front crossmember.
- Separate torque converter from drive plate. (AT vehicles)
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove service hole plug.
- Remove bolts which hold torque converter to drive plate.
- Remove other bolts while rotating the engine using ST.
ST 499977100 CRANK PULLEY WRENCH
- Remove pitching stopper.
- Disconnect fuel delivery hose, return hose and evaporation hose.CAUTION:
- Disconnect hose with its end wrapped with cloth to prevent fuel from splashing.
- Catch fuel from hose into container.
- Support engine with a lifting device and wire ropes.
- Support transmission with a garage jack.CAUTION: Before moving engine away from transmission, check to be sure no work has been overlooked. Doing this is very important in order to facilitate re-installation and because transmission lowers under its own weight.
- Separation of engine and transmission.
- Remove starter, see REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
- Install ST to torque converter clutch case (AT model).
ST 498277200 STOPPER SET
- Remove bolts which hold upper side of transmission to engine.
- Remove engine from vehicle:
- Slightly raise engine.
- Raise transmission with garage jack.
- Move engine horizontally until mainshaft is withdrawn from clutch cover.
- Slowly move engine away from engine compartment.
CAUTION: Be careful not to damage adjacent parts or body panels with crank pulley, oil pressure gauge, etc.
