Starter - Direct Drive: Overhaul: Disassembly

1. Scribe mating surfaces of starter housing and drive housing and mating surfaces of solenoid and drive housing for reassembly reference.
2. Remove starter housing field coil lead-to-solenoid terminal retaining nut. Remove 2 screws holding solenoid to drive housing. Remove solenoid.
3. Loosen and remove 2 bolts and 2 screws holding commutator cover to starter housing. Remove commutator cover from starter housing. Separate drive housing and yoke from starter housing.
4. Draw brushes from brush holder. To remove over-run clutch, push stop ring in toward clutch side, remove armature ring, and slide-off over-run clutch. See Fig 1.
