Starter - Gear Reduction: Description
The starter described in this article is the gear reduction type, consisting of a starter motor assembly and separate plunger-style solenoid (Magnetic Switch). The solenoid is activated when the ignition switch is closed, causing the starter pinion to engage with the flywheel. When the engine starts, the pinion over-running clutch protects the armature from being overdriven until the ignition switch is opened, at that time the return spring causes the pinion to disengage.
