Esteem 1.8L

Ensure transmission is in Neutral or Park. Set parking brake. Inspect crankshaft pulley timing mark and timing mark indicator on timing belt or chain cover. Clean marks as required. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Attach timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire. Ensure idle speed is correct. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE.
Connect Suzuki scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure . On scan tool, select MISC mode and fix ignition timing by selecting FIXED SPARK mode, or connect jumper wire between test switch connector terminals "D" and "E". See Figure . Aim timing light at timing marks. See Fig 3 Fig 1 . Ignition timing should be 1-6 degrees BTDC. If timing is not as specified, go to next step.
If ignition timing is not within specification, loosen CMP sensor bolts and turn CMP sensor until timing marks line up. See Fig 2 . With engine idling, end FIXED SPARK MODE or disconnect jumper wire from test connector. Using timing light verify that there is a constant variation in timing within a few degrees of 11-16 degrees, indicating proper operation of electronic timing system. Also, check that timing advances when increasing engine speed. If results are not satisfactory, check the following for proper operation:
- Throttle Position Sensor
- Test Switch Signal Circuit
- Engine Control Module
If problem is found, repair or replace as necessary. After repair, retest system.
