Tercel models use a Nippondenso conventional 12-volt, 4-pole, brush-type direct drive starter. Integral solenoid is attached to drive housing. When starter is energized, starter solenoid causes starter pinion to engage with flywheel ring gear. Overrunning clutch pinion drive is mounted directly on drive end of armature shaft.
