Tercel models use direct drive and reduction gear type starters. Reduction gear type are 4-brush, solenoid-actuated, reduction gear-type starters, equipped with an overrunning clutch. The brush holder assembly retains brushes and springs in the starter housing.

Direct drive is a 12-volt, 4-pole, brush-type starter. Integral solenoid is attached to drive housing. When starter is energized, starter solenoid causes starter pinion to engage with flywheel ring gear. Overrunning clutch pinion drive is mounted directly on drive end of armature shaft.
