Starter Component Inspection: Commutator

  1. If commutator runout (out-of-round) is more than .002" (.05 mm), turn commutator on a suitable lathe until runout is within specification.
  2. Wear or cutting limit of commutator diameter is 1.22" (31.0 mm) for Cressida and 1.14" (29.0 mm) for all other models.
  3. If commutator diameter is worn or turned down more than .008"(.20 mm), undercut insulating mica between commutator segments to a depth of about .008-.024" (.20-.60 mm).
