System Outline
The radar cruise control system allows you to drive at a selected cruising speed, maintaining an appropriate vehicle-to-vehicle distance using the laser radar sensor, the steering sensor and the yaw rate sensor. The laser radar sensor detects the reflection of the vehicle ahead in your lane.
- Setting Operation
<Vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode
While the ON-OFF SW is ON (The power indicator light is turned on), bring the vehicle to the desired speed, press the control lever downward in the "- SET" direction and release it. This sets the vehicle at that speed, as long as the speed is between the lower settable speed limit of about 45 km/h (28 mph) and the upper settable speed limit of about 135 km/h (85 mph). If the vehicle speed is faster than 135 km/h (85 mph) however, the speed will be set to the upper speed limit.
<Conventional cruise control mode
While the ON-OFF SW is ON (The power indicator light is turned on), bring the vehicle to the desired speed, press the control lever downward in the "- SET" direction and release it. This sets the vehicle to that speed. It is only possible to set the speed to a value between the lower and the higher speed limits.
- Adjusting the set Speed
<Vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode
- Adjusting to a lower speed
The set speed can be decreased 5 mph (For USA) or 5 km/h (For Canada) by pressing the control lever downward in the "- SET" direction and releasing it within 0.5 seconds.
If the control lever is held down in the "- SET" direction however, the set speed will decrease gradually and continuously in steps of 5 mph (For USA) or 5 km/h (For Canada) as long as the switch is held down. But you cannot decrease the speed to below the lower speed limit of about 27 mph (For USA) or 43 km/h (For Canada). If the preset speed is changed, the vehicle speed will gradually be decreased to the set speed.
- Adjusting to a faster speed
The set speed can be increased 5 mph (For USA) or 5 km/h (For Canada) by pressing the control lever upward in the "+ RES" direction and releasing it within 0.5 seconds.
If the control lever is held down in the "+ RES" direction however, the set speed will increase every gradually and continuously in steps of 5 mph (For USA) or 5 km/h (For Canada) as long as the switch is held down. But you cannot increase the speed to above the upper speed limit. If the set speed is changed, the vehicle speed will gradually be increased to the set speed.
* If the distance control mode is active, and the control lever is pressed upward in the "+ RES" direction, the vehicle speed will not be increased but the set speed will be changed.
<Conventional cruise control mode
- Deceleration
* If the cruise control is active and the control lever is held downward in the "- SET" direction, the vehicle speed will gradually decrease. When you release it, the vehicle speed will be set at that speed. If the control lever is released while the vehicle speed exceeds the upper limit of the set speed, such as when traveling downhill, the system will store the upper speed limit of the set speed as the set speed.
* When the difference between the actual vehicle speed and the set speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the set speed will be decreased in steps of 1.6 km/h (1 mph) each time the control lever is pressed downward in the "- SET" direction and released within 0.5 seconds. But if the control lever is released when the difference between the actual vehicle speed and the set speed is more than 5 km/h (3 mph), then the set speed will be set to the current vehicle speed.
- Acceleration
* If the cruise control is active and the control lever is held upward in the "+ RES" direction, the vehicle speed will gradually increase. When you release it, the vehicle speed will be set at that speed. If the vehicle speed exceeds the upper limit of the preset speed while you are pressing the control lever downward, the system will cruise at the upper limit of the set speed. And if the control lever is released, this will set the vehicle speed at that speed.
* When the difference between the actual vehicle speed and the set speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the set speed will be increased in steps of 1.6 km/h (1 mph) each time the control lever is pressed upward in the "+ RES" direction and released within 0.5 seconds. But if the control lever is released when the difference between the actual vehicle speed and the set speed is more than 5 km/h (3 mph), then the set speed will be set to the current vehicle speed.
* If the control lever was being pressed downward, and was then released when the vehicle speed had been increased by pressing the acceleration pedal, the system will store the current vehicle speed as the set speed. But if the control lever is operated downward when the vehicle speed is already greater than the upper limit of the set speed, then the speed cannot be set.
- Adjusting to a lower speed
- Lower Settable Speed Limit
* This is the lowest speed to which the cruise control can be set. This is different to the lower cancel speed limit.
* USA : about 27 mph
* Canada : about 43 km/h
* If the vehicle speed is below the lower settable speed limit, you cannot change the set speed.
- Lower Cancel Speed Limit
* If the vehicle speed falls below about 40 km/h (25 mph), the cruise control will automatically be cancelled. In vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode the set speed will be retained, but in conventional cruise control mode the set speed will be deleted.
- Upper Settable Speed Limit
This is the highest speed to which the cruise control can be set.
* USA : about 85 mph
* Canada : about 139 km/h
- Cruise Control Upper Settable Speed Limit (Conventional Cruise Control Mode Only)
This is the upper limit of the possible speed to use the cruise control.
* USA : about 125 mph
* Canada : about 200 km/h
- Resuming the Set Speed
* If the cruise control has been canceled, the control lever is pushed upward in the "+ RES" direction while "RADAR READY" is displayed on the instrument cluster, and the vehicle speed is above the lower cancel speed limit, then the vehicle will be restored to the speed set prior to cancellation.
However, if the vehicle speed is below the lower settable speed limit, the preset speed can not be resumed in conventional cruise control mode.
* During follow-up cruising, if there are no vehicles ahead because they have changed lanes, your vehicle will gradually accelerate back up to the preset speed. At this time, pushing the control lever upward in the "+ RES" direction will cause the vehicle to accelerate more quickly in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode.
- Shift Down Control
While the cruise control is on, there is a chance of the over drive being cancelled when the vehicle is driven up a steep hill. Once the hill climbing has finished, and the over drive timer has expired, the vehicle will return to overdrive mode.
- Canceling the Set Speed
If any of the following signals are received by the cruise control micro computer while the cruise control is active, the system will be cancelled. (The set speed will be retained)
- The brake pedal is depressed. (Stop light switch signal is received)
- The "D" position circuit in neutral start switch is turned on and then off
If any of the following signals are received by the cruise control micro computer while the cruise control is active, the system will be cancelled. (The set speed will not be retained.)
- The transmission is changed from "D" or "N"
- The transmission is in the "S" position, and is changed from "5" or "4" to "N", "3", "2" or "1"
- The control lever is pulled in the "CANCEL" direction.
- The ON-OFF SW is turned OFF
- The VSC system is activated.
- Automatic Cancellation
- If any of the following conditions occurs, the set speed will be deleted and the cruise control system will be canceled. Additionally, the "CRUISE" indicator light on the instrument cluster will flash until the ON-OFF SW has been turned off, the master warning light will come on, the warning tone sounds, and the warning code will appear on the display. The cruise control cannot be reactivated until the power SW has been turned off and then on again.
- The vehicle speed sensor malfunctions
- Parts of the electronic throttle malfunction
- The stop light switch circuit is open or shorted
- If any of the following conditions occurs, the set speed will be deleted and the cruise control system will be canceled. Additionally, the "CRUISE" indicator light on the instrument cluster will flash until the ON-OFF SW has been turned off, the master warning light will come on, the warning tone sounds, and the warning code will appear on the display. The cruise control cannot be reactivated until the ON-OFF SW has been turned off and then on again.
- The laser radar sensor malfunctions
- The laser radar sensor beam axis is not aimed properly
- The radar cruise control system has a malfunction except other than those listed above
- If any of the following conditions then occurs, the set speed is deleted automatically and the cruise control system will be canceled. Additionally, the "CRUISE" indicator light in the instrument cluster will flash until the ON-OFF SW is turned off, the master warning light will comes, the warning tone will sound, and the warning code will appear on the display. The cruise control system cannot be activated again until A)~D) return to normal (it is possible to resume) and the ON-OFF SW is turned off and then on again.
- The laser radar sensor is dirtied.
- The wipers are operated at high or low speeds (Including high and low speed operations with the wiper lever in the "AUTO" position.).
- Strong direct light, such as sunlight, etc. from the front.
- It is determined that it is difficult to make a measurement because of bad weather (Such as rainy, foggy, or snowy weather).
- If any of the following conditions then occurs, the cruise control will be automatically cancelled.
If the vehicle is in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode, then the preset speed will be stored.
- The vehicle speed falls below about 40 km/h (25 mph).
- The vehicle speed drops 16 km/h (10 mph) or more below the set speed. (Only for the conventional cruise control mode)
- Changing the Radar Cruise Control Mode
When the ON-OFF SW is pushed, the vehicle-to-vehicle distance mode will be activated. To change to conventional (Fixed speed) cruise control mode, push the lever in the "MODE" direction for 1 second or more.
However, once the vehicle-to-vehicle distance mode activates and is used, it cannot be changed to the conventional cruise control mode using the above operation.
To change the mode in these circumstances, turn the ON-OFF SW off and then on. Then push the lever in the "MODE" direction for 1 second or more.
If a system malfunction then occurs, turn the engine off and then on again. The next time the above operation is performed, the cruise control will change modes.
