4-Cylinder Ignition Timing
- Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Ensure engine oil temperature is 176°F (80°C). Ensure A/C and electrical loads are off, including radiator cooling fan. Ensure no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are stored.
- Connect Engine Analyzer (VAG 1367) and Inductive Pick-Up (VAG 1367/8) to engine. Connect CO tester using Adapter (VAG 1363/3) on CO tap tube. DO NOT remove oxygen sensor. Ensure exhaust system has no leaks. Start engine and let it idle.
- On California (Digifant I) models, disconnect Blue Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. Increase engine speed to 2300 RPM and check ignition timing. Reconnect ECT sensor. Increase engine speed to 4500 RPM and check ignition timing advance. Displayed value MUST be at least 30 degrees more than (base) ignition timing.
- On Federal (Digifant II) models, disconnect Blue ECT sensor. Increase engine speed to 2000-2500 RPM and check ignition timing. Reconnect ECT sensor, increase engine speed 3 times, and allow engine to return to idle. Increase engine speed to 2300 RPM and check ignition timing advance. Displayed value MUST be at least 20-30 degrees more than (base) ignition timing.
- If after reconnecting Blue ECT sensor, ignition timing does not advance, check ECT sensor circuit, wiring harness and electronic control module. On all models, check and adjust idle speed if necessary. See IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE. Turn ignition off.
