Hall Effect Sender (Passat GLX)
NOTE:
Passat used a distributor type ignition system in vehicles with a production date of 1/93 or before. Engine code may be PG or AAA.
Voltage Supply Check
- Ensure ignition switch is off.
- Disconnect Hall Control Unit wire harness connector.
- Switch multimeter to 20 volt range.
- Connect multimeter to outer terminals of Hall Control Unit wire harness connector using VW 1594 adapter kit. See Fig 1 .
- Turn ignition switch on. Voltage reading should be at least 10 volts.
If wire harness is okay, replace Engine Control Module (ECM).
- Turn ignition switch off
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM)
- Reconnect Hall Control Unit harness connector
Functional Check
- Disconnect main harness connector for fuel injectors.
- Disconnect Hall Sender harness connector from distributor.
- Push up rubber boot (covering connector) exposing terminals and reconnect Hall Sender harness connector to distributor.
- Connect US 1115 LED tester to center terminal and then to either outer terminal of Hall Sender harness connector, using VW 1594 adapter kit. See Fig 2 .
- Turn ignition switch to start and LED tester must flicker. If LED tester does not flicker, replace distributor.
