Hall Effect Sender (Passat GLX)

NOTE: Passat used a distributor type ignition system in vehicles with a production date of 1/93 or before. Engine code may be PG or AAA.

Voltage Supply Check

  1. Ensure ignition switch is off.
  2. Disconnect Hall Control Unit wire harness connector.
  3. Switch multimeter to 20 volt range.
  4. Connect multimeter to outer terminals of Hall Control Unit wire harness connector using VW 1594 adapter kit. See Fig 1 .

  6. Turn ignition switch on. Voltage reading should be at least 10 volts.

If wire harness is okay, replace Engine Control Module (ECM).

Functional Check

  1. Disconnect main harness connector for fuel injectors.
  2. Disconnect Hall Sender harness connector from distributor.
  3. Push up rubber boot (covering connector) exposing terminals and reconnect Hall Sender harness connector to distributor.
  4. Connect US 1115 LED tester to center terminal and then to either outer terminal of Hall Sender harness connector, using VW 1594 adapter kit. See Fig 2 .

  6. Turn ignition switch to start and LED tester must flicker. If LED tester does not flicker, replace distributor.
