Injection Pump Timing

  1. Remove rear gear cover. Disconnect cold-start device. Loosen forward screw on cold-start device. Loosen forward screw on cold-start device control lever. DO NOT loosen screw closest to timing belt. Press lever back toward stop.
  2. Turn engine to align mark on injection pump gear with mark on pump bracket. "O" mark on flywheel should be centered at timing mark window (No. 1-Cyl. TDC).
  3. Remove plug from rear of pump. Install dial indicator adapter (5194). Set dial indicator to 0-.076" (0-1.9 mm) range. Set dial indicator to pre-load to .08" (2.0 mm).
  4. Slowly turn engine counterclockwise until lowest reading on dial indicator is observed. Set dial indicator to zero.
  5. Slowly turn engine clockwise until "O" mark on flywheel is centered at timing mark window. Dial indicator should read within the checking range.
NOTE: If engine is turned past timing mark, turn engine back 1/4 turn. Turn engine clockwise until "O" mark on flywheel is centered at timing mark window.
  6. If dial indicator setting is outside checking range, loose pump bolts and turn pump until dial indicator shows the correct setting. Retighten pump bolts.
  7. Crank engine 2 complete revolutions and recheck injection pump timing. Readjust if necessary. Remove dial indicator and adapter. Reinstall rear plug, timing gear cover and reconnect cold-start device.
