Timing Retard

  1. Connect a standard radiator pressure tester to distributor vacuum advance unit. Plug hose removed from distributor.
  2. Using a dwell meter with a scale extending to 70°, set on 4-cylinder position and attach meter to Lambda-Sond service pick-up of the electronic control unit. See Figure .
  3. Start engine. Note ignition timing at idle. Pump pressure tester up to 5.1 psi (.35 kg/cm2 ). Ignition timing should retard 6-10°. If not, check distributor and replace vacuum advance unit, if required.
