Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

  1. Verify fuse No. 24 in underdash fuse block is okay. Speed sensor is located on transaxle. Unplug 3-pin connector from speed sensor.
  2. Turn ignition on. Check for voltage between Black and Black/Yellow wires. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage exists, go to step 5). If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.

  3. With ignition on, check for battery voltage between Black/Yellow wire and ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between speed sensor and underdash fuse box.
  4. Check for continuity between Black wire and ground. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open between vehicle speed sensor and ground.
  5. Measure voltage between Orange wire and ground. If voltage is about 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not about 5 volts, repair short to ground in Orange wire.
  6. Reconnect wiring to speed sensor. Raise and support vehicle. Connect voltmeter between sensor connector Orange wire and ground. With ignition on and transaxle in Neutral, block one front wheel and slowly rotate other front wheel. If voltage does not pulse between zero and 10 volts, replace speed sensor.
