Steering Column: Description

WARNING: Vehicle is equipped with a driver-side air bag, use extreme caution while servicing steering column. Ensure battery is disconnected before attempting any repair. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without disabling air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.

A 2-piece safety steering column with a slip-joint flange connection is used. The upper steering column is supported by a column tube and a steering lock assembly. See Fig 1. The lower column is a collapsible, tubular type, held in place by the universal couplings at each end. All models have driver's air bag.
