Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) System Check

NOTE: To identify modules on serial data line, refer to WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  1. Check all power and ground circuits. See IPC POWER & GROUND CHECK  under COMPONENT TESTING. Go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with modules on serial data line. If a problem exists, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If all modules communicate, go to next step. If a problem exists, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  3. Ensure vehicle is in Park. Turn ignition on. Odometer display should perform a 2 second segment function test. The ABS, LOW FUEL, CHECK GAUGES, BRAKE and SECURITY lights should illuminate for 3 seconds as a bulb check. PRNDL should show "P". BATTERY light should stay on. AIR BAG light should flash 7 times. SEAT BELT light should stay on for 20 seconds , then flash for 55 seconds. MIL should stay on. If all lights operate as specified, go to next step. If lights do not operate as specified, complete check and go to INDICATOR DOES NOT OPERATE PROPERLY  under COMPONENT TESTING.
  4. Start engine. With brakes applied, move shift lever through all positions. PRNDL should show each position. If PRNDL operates as specified, go to next step. If PRNDL does not operate as specified, see AUTO TRANS DIAGNOSIS article.
  5. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If no DTCs exist, check is complete. If DTCs exist, see SELF-DIAGNOSTIC - SYSTEM  .
