Road Test

NOTE: Perform road test to determine if problem is related to a mechanical or electrical component.
  1. Stop engine. Disconnect 32-pin electrical connector from transmission Control Unit (TCU). The TCU is located above steering column or on top left side of instrument panel, near steering column on Grand Cherokee or behind right side of instrument panel on all others. See Fig 1 .
NOTE: On Grand Cherokee models, TCU may be mounted toward top of instrument panel and is retained by nut plate attached from the engine compartment.

  2. Road test vehicle. Shift transmission into each gear. Transmission should operate as follows:
    • Lock when in Park
    • Back-up when in Reverse
    • Vehicle should not move in Neutral
    • Provide 1st gear only with shift lever in "1-2" position
    • Operate in 3rd gear only with shift lever in "3" position
    • Operate in 4th gear (overdrive gear) in "D" position
  3. If transmission operates properly, proceed to step 5). If forward gears were difficult to distinguish (all feel the same), or vehicle would not back-up, see TROUBLE SHOOTING  . DO NOT  perform torque converter stall speed test or time lag test.
  4. Continue road test. Manually downshift transmission from "D" to "3", and from "3" to "1-2" position. Manually upshift transmission through forward gears again.
CAUTION: DO NOT  overspeed engine when performing downshifts. Release throttle and allow vehicle to slow down before downshifting.
  5. If transmission operates properly, perform torque converter stall speed test, time lag test and hydraulic pressure test. If problem still exists, check electronic control system for stored trouble codes. See AUTO TRANS DIAGNOSIS - AW4 (4.0L 6-CYL) article. Once road test is completed, reconnect TCU.
NOTE: For transmission gear component application, see CLUTCH, BRAKE & BAND APPLICATION CHART  and VALVE BODY SOLENOID APPLICATION CHART  .
