Injection Pump Timing
- Disconnect fuel injection pipes from injection pump. Remove hydraulic head plug on injection pump. Align timing mark (2° ATDC) on crankshaft pulley with indicator pin by turning crankshaft.
- Mount measuring device (49 9140 076) into plug hole on hydraulic head so tip of dial gauge indicates approximately .08" (2.0 mm). See Fig 1 .
- Turn crankshaft pulley slowly counterclockwise until timing mark on crankshaft pulley moves 30-50° from original position (2° ATDC) and make sure dial indicator pointer stops. Set dial gauge pointer at "zero".NOTE: When setting dial indicator, slightly turn crankshaft right and left and check to see that dial indicator pointer does not move from "zero".
- Turn crankshaft pulley clockwise to align timing mark with indicator pin. If dial gauge pointer indicates .04" (1.0 mm) when timing mark is aligned with indicator pin, injection pump timing is properly adjusted. If timing needs adjustment, loosen injection pump attaching nuts and bolt.NOTE: Before adjusting injection timing, turn injection pump counterclockwise to cancel timing gear backlash, then turn injection pump clockwise and adjust injection timing.
- Make injection timing adjustment by moving pump so cam lift matches specification. When cam lift is more than specification, turn pump counterclockwise to advance injection timing. When cam lift is less than specification, turn pump clockwise to retard injection timing. Bleed air from pump.
