Basic Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Perform keyless entry system basic diagnostic procedure. See KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - FORESTER. Perform pre-inspection. See PRE-INSPECTION.  . Go to next step.
  2. Open all windows. Remove ignition key from ignition. Set dome light switch in middle position. Close all doors and tailgate. Press LOCK/ARM button one time. If clearance lights blinks one time, go to next step. If clearance light does not blink one time, go to TEST NO. 1 - CHECKING CLEARANCE LIGHT CIRCUIT  .
  3. Check if SECURITY light blinks every 2 seconds. If light blinks every 2 seconds, go to next step. If light does not blink every 2 seconds, go to TEST NO. 2 - CHECKING SECURITY LIGHT CIRCUIT  .
  4. Press UNLOCK/DISARM button one time. If clearance lights blinks 2 times, go to next step. If clearance light does not blink 2 times, replace security control module. See SECURITY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Check if dome light comes on for 30 seconds and then turns off. If light comes on for 30 seconds and then goes off, go to next step. If light does come on for 30 seconds and then go off, replace security control module. See SECURITY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  6. Unlock all doors using driver door key lock. Open driver door. If SECURITY light blinks about every 1/8 second, go to next step. If light does not blink about every 1/8 second, go to TEST NO. 3 - CHECKING COMBINATION METER CIRCUIT  .
  7. Check if clearance light begins blinking. If clearance light is blinking, go to next step. If clearance light is not blinking, replace security control module. See SECURITY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  8. Check if horn is sounding. If horn is sounding, go to next step. If horn is not sounding, replace security control module. See SECURITY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  9. Attempt to start vehicle. If vehicle starts, go to TEST NO. 4 - CHECKING STARTER MOTOR CIRCUIT  . If vehicle does not start, go to next step.
  10. Close driver door. After 30 seconds, if horn goes off, clearance light goes off and vehicle will start, go to next step. If horn does not go off, clearance light stays on or vehicle will not start, replace security control module. See SECURITY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  11. Check if SECURITY light blinks every 2 seconds. If light is blinking every 2 seconds, go to next step. If light does not blink every 2 seconds, replace security control module. See SECURITY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  12. Open passenger door. If SECURITY light blinks about every 1/8 second, horn sounds, clearance light blinks and vehicle cannot be started, go to next step. If SECURITY light does not blink about every 1/8 second, horn does not sound, clearance light does not blink and vehicle can be started, go to TEST NO. 5 - CHECKING FRONT DOOR SWITCH CIRCUITS  .
  13. Press UNLOCK/DISARM button. If SECURITY light blinks, horn goes off, clearance light goes out and vehicle can be started, go to next step. If SECURITY light does not blinks, horn does not go off, clearance light does not go out and vehicle cannot be started, replace security control module. See SECURITY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  14. Close passenger door. Press LOCK/ALARM button. Open left rear door. If SECURITY light blinks about every 1/8 second, horn sounds, clearance light blinks and vehicle cannot be started, go to next step. If SECURITY light does not blink about every 1/8 second, horn does not sound, clearance light does not blink and vehicle can be started, go to TEST 6 - CHECKING LEFT REAR DOOR SWITCH CIRCUIT  .
  15. Close left rear door and open right rear door. If SECURITY light blinks about every 1/8 second, horn sounds, clearance light blinks and vehicle cannot be started, go to next step. If SECURITY light does not blink about every 1/8 second, horn does not sound, clearance light does not blink and vehicle can be started, go to TEST NO. 7 - CHECKING RIGHT REAR DOOR SWITCH CIRCUIT  .
  16. Close right rear door. Open liftgate. If SECURITY light blinks about every 1/8 second, horn sounds, clearance light blinks and vehicle cannot be started, go to next step. If SECURITY light does not blink about every 1/8 second, horn does not sound, clearance light does not blink and vehicle can be started, go to TEST NO. 8 - CHECKING LIFTGATE SWITCH CIRCUIT  .
  17. Close liftgate and all windows. Arm system. Hit center of windshield with palm of hand. If horn chirps, go to next step. If horn does not chirp, go to TEST 9 - CHECKING SECURITY CONTROL MODULE  .
  18. Remove driver side front lower "A" pillar cover. Ensure White connector is connected to passive arm connector. Close all doors and liftgate. If arming function arm automatically after 1 minute, go to next step. If vehicle does not arm after 1 minute, go to TEST 10 - CHECKING PASSIVE ARMING CIRCUIT  .
  19. Press UNLOCK/DISARM button. Ensure White connector is connected to passive arm connector. Install driver side "A" pillar cover. Open hood. Press LOCK/ARM button. Disconnect negative battery cable. Reconnect negative battery cable. If vehicle re-arms automatically, press UNLOCK/DISARM button. Close all doors and liftgate. Turn ignition from LOCK to ON to LOCK. System is okay. If vehicle does not re-arm automatically, replace security control module. See SECURITY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
