Ignition Timing
CAUTION:
Some tachometers may not be compatible with ignition system. Consult tachometer manufacturer before connecting tachometer to ignition system. To avoid possible damage to ignitor and/or coil, DO NOT allow tachometer terminal to become grounded.
- Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Shut engine off. On Non-Turbo models, connect timing light to spark plug wire on cylinder No. 1.
- On Turbo models, open cover located above the ignitor. Connect timing light lead to Green wire and to battery. See Fig 3. Ignitor is located near driver's side strut tower.
- On all models, connect tachometer to proper terminals of data link connector No. 1, located in engine compartment. See Fig 1.
- Apply parking brake. Place transmission in Neutral. Start engine and maintain engine at 2500 RPM for 90 seconds and then allow engine to idle. Ensure idle speed is 650-750 RPM on Non-Turbo models or 600-700 on Turbo models.
- Install Jumper Wire (SST 09843-18020) between terminals TE1 and E1 of data link connector No. 1. See Fig 2.
NOTE:
Timing marks are located on front cover.
- Ensure base timing is within specification at idle with transmission in Neutral, electric cooling fan off, A/C and all accessories off. See the 6-CYLINDER IGNITION TIMING table.
- On Non-Turbo models, if ignition timing is incorrect, loosen distributor hold-down nut. Adjust ignition timing by rotating distributor. Tighten distributor hold-down nut.
- On Turbo models, if ignition timing is incorrect, check valve timing by ensuring proper alignment of timing belt. See the ENGINES article in ENGINE MECHANICAL section.
- On all models, remove jumper wire from data link connector No. 1. Ensure advance timing is within specification. See the 6-CYLINDER IGNITION TIMING table. Remove tachometer and timing light.
