Charge System Light

NOTE: Before testing, check wire harness connection, alternator belt tension, No. 2 (15 A) fuse in dash fuse box and No. 18 (20 A) fuse in main fuse box.
  1. Turn ignition switch on. The charge system light should come on. If it does not come on, disconnect alternator connector and short pin L (WHT/BLU) terminal to ground. See Fig 1 .
  2. If light still does not come on, check for a bad bulb, an open in WHT/BLU wire between light and voltage regulator or an open in BLK/YEL wire between light and dash fuse box, or dash fuse box and ignition switch. If light comes on, check alternator and regulator. See ALTERNATOR & REGULATOR TEST  .
  3. Start engine and let it idle. The charge system light should go off. If it stays on this time, check YEL/BLU wire between main fuse box and alternator. If fuse and wire are okay, check alternator and regulator. See ALTERNATOR & REGULATOR TEST  . If system is charging, proceed as follows.
  4. Remove door sill molding and cowl lining pieces.
  5. NOTE: Do not disconnect all connectors from dash fuse box.
  6. Remove 26-P connector from integrated control unit on dash fuse box. See Fig 2 . With engine running, charge system light should go off. If light goes off, there is a short in integrated control unit. If light does not go off, there is a short to ground in WHT/BLU wire between light and control unit.
  7. Remove glove box and disconnect 20-P connector from ALB control unit. See Fig 3 . With engine running, charge system light should go off. If light goes off, there is a short in ALB control unit. If light does not go out, there is a short to ground in WHT/BLU wire between light and ALB control unit.
  8. On vehicles with automatic transmissions, disconnect 18-P connector from EPS control unit. With engine running, charge light should go off. See Fig 4 . If light goes off, there is a short in EPS control unit. If light does not go out, there is a short to ground in WHT/BLU wire between charge system light and EPS control unit.
