Checking Ignition Timing: 1993-94
- Start the engine and allow it to warm up until cooling fan comes on.
- Pull out the service check connector located under the middle of the dash. Connect the BLU and GRN/WHT terminals with a jumper wire.
- Check the idle speed.
- Connect a timing light to the engine, while the engine idles, point the light toward the pointer on the timing belt cover. See Figure .
- Inspect ignition timing at idle. See Figure
.
- Ignition Timing: 13-17° BTDC (RED)
- Automatic Transmission idle speed at 700-800 RPM in Park or Neutral.
- Manual Transmission idle speed at 750-850 RPM in Neutral.
- Adjust ignition timing, if necessary, by turning the adjusting screw on the ignition timing adjuster in control box.
- To access timing adjuster screw, remove the control box cover.
- Remove the 2 screws from the control box, then disconnect the 3-pin connector from the ignition timing adjuster. See Figure .
- Remove the ignition timing adjuster from the control box.
- Drill the 2 rivets off with a 3/16" drill bit, then separate the stay cover from the adjuster. Reconnect the adjuster to the car, start the engine, and turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise to retard the timing, or clockwise to advance it, as necessary. See Figure .
- Remove the jumper wire from the service check connector.
- After adjusting, reinstall the stay cover to the ignition timing adjuster with new rivets, then reinstall the adjuster to the control box.
CAUTION:
Do not damage the adjuster when removing the rivets.
